Cook-Hayman Pharmacy Museum

In May the Cannabis Museum traveled to Morgantown, W.V. to visit the Cook-Hayman Pharmacy Museum at WV University.  A fascinating experience was enjoyed by all as our well-informed docent Clarke walked us through the considerable collection of pharmaceutical treasures. There were many items such as doctors tools and medicines that had not been seen before, there were historical leeches preserved in bottles, drawers full of women’s medicine, and of course bottles with cannabis in them.  I recommend this museum experience for all interested in the history of pharmacy. AAM Annual Conference

The Cannabis Museum Staff recently visited New Orleans to attend the annual American Alliance of Museums meeting.  The conference provided us with many prospective partners and resources as well as confirming our suspicions, the museum community is ready to embrace the censored history of Cannabis.  In addition to the conference and lots of tasty food, we also visited the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum. In the heart of the French Quarter, tucked amongst the shops and restaurants, three stories of truly awesome history are preserved.  The first floor houses the collection of dried herbs, alkaloids, minerals and other medicines of the time, as well as the methods of use. In a small case, they have cannabis artifacts on display. Naturally, we see the crowd slow down when they see Cannabis hand painted on over one-hundred-year-old glass. The second floor is off limits to the public, presumably storage. The third floor, however, is filled with instruments, medical tools and prosthetics, as well as books and illustrations regarding procedures of the time. We spent over two hours shuffling through the collection enjoying the reactions of our fellow patrons. As we tore ourselves away, we observed the interest of the crowd and reaffirmed that the community is ready to see the forgotten history of Cannabis. -H.Cachat

ComFest
