Cliff 1

October 7, 2025

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Cliff, born in 1950 (age 75 at time of interview), moved to Vinton County Ohio in 1969. He started growing cannabis in 1971, using seeds from Mexican and Colombian cannabis. Cliff's interview discusses his focused intent to create “red pot” by cross-pollinating these seeds. Like many growers of the times, Cliff faced challenges from thieves and law enforcement. Cliff notes the shift from outdoor to indoor growing and the impact of legalization on the local economy.

Cliff 01:49Right. I grew up in Cleveland, like a lot of folks that came back down here. And my parents were bookkeepers, both of them. One worked in a credit union, and the other one worked as a statistician for a big manufacturing plant, in Cleveland. So, yeah, but I came down here because its a pretty place to be, and it got me out of the city, where I was just gettin' in trouble. (Laughs)

Talcon 02:35I'm gonna pause for a minute. Johnny, are you able to hear him? Okay, or you want him to move closer to the table or anything?

Cliff 02:42We started coming down in ' 69. My cousin and his roommate, two doc - medical students from Cleveland, they were studying case - and they came down and rented the house over on Storage Run, and furnished it with all kinds of antique furniture, you know. In fact, the matter is, they even had had a rope bed. You know what a rope bed is?

John Clift 02:47No, it's great.

Talcon 02:51Cool. Perfect. So, you came down here from Cleveland because it was beautiful, because you didn't want to get in trouble .... did you know people down here, what year did you arrive?
