Seller Notes

“Early 1800's Hand Held Flax Scutcher, made of oak. A very early Pennsylvania hand carved wooden tool used in the preparation of flax for spinning into yarn. Scutcher tools are quite unusual in shape with rounded sides that come to a wide blade like edge. This one has a nicely shaped long handle affording good balance. Some folks believe these were also used as Feather Bed Smoothers, perhaps, it certainly has enough weight and length to have served that dual purpose.Beautiful deep natural patina to the wood, and plenty of honest wear. Still in excellent condition. It measures a total of 19-3/4" in length. The blade is 7-3/4" in circumference.Weighs nearly 2 lbs. Thanks for shopping with BlackBuggyAntiques!”
